Yankees To Strengthen Their Roster By Adding These Two Stars

Unsurprisingly, the New York Yankees have high expectations. The Yankees have one of the most expensive payrolls in baseball, yet they haven’t won the World Series since 2009. The Yankees have a lot of potential, but they only won 82 games in 2023 because of uneven performance and a lot of injuries.

Yankees To Strengthen Their Roster By Adding These Two Stars

The Yankees are starting again and will be quite busy this summer. New York’s roster includes a variety of requirements. According to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, they might fill roster gaps this summer by signing both star outfielder Cody Bellinger and pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, and San Diego Padres are expected to be the most active suitors for Bellinger this summer.

Nightengale said Bellinger would want a deal of greater than $200 million.

A transaction of that scale would be a tremendous turn of events for Bellinger. After earning the NL MVP as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019, his career has taken a nosedive.

“The Yankees must upgrade their offence after finishing 24th in OPS this season,” Kirschner said. “They have immediate holes in left field and centre field, with the latter being open because of Jasson Domínguez’s Tommy John surgery that will hold him out for at least half of 2024.

“With our prediction of (Hal Steinbrenner) making his biggest statement in years, not only will the Yankees sign one of the best pitchers in Yamamoto but they’ll also add Bellinger, too. Bellinger had a resurgent 2023 season after two awful years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, leading them to non-tender him just one year ago.”

From 2020 to ’22, Bellinger hit 203/.272/.376 with 41 homers in 1,032 at-bats in 295 games with the Los Angeles Angels.

Despite having one more year of team control, the Dodgers elected not to tender Bellinger after his troubles in 2022. He agreed to terms with the Cubs on a one-year, $17.5 million contract that includes a mutual option for 2024.

The Yankees would be better if they added either Yamamoto or Bellinger. If they can land both, as Kirschner implied, they will be right back in the playoff conversation, if not the World Series. New York has plenty of cash and has been connected to both Yamamoto and Bellinger on several times.
